You can use Google Maps to help test and/or recalibrate a device's GPS accuracy
1.) Ask the user to open up Google Maps on their device
2.) Ask the user to select the Blue icon that represents their location
3.) A window should pop up with more information about the location of the device.
- If the user has low GPS accuracy, they will have to follow the steps to recalibrate their GPS by selecting the button shown below:
4.) The user should be then prompted to use their phone camera to scan their surroundings as seen below:
5.) If the user is not able to properly scan their surrounding, they will be prompted to try again or use the compass:
6.) The "Compass" calibration asks the user to make repeated figure-eight motions with their phone in their hand. Do this until location accuracy improves.
7.) If none of the above steps work, the device's GPS hardware may be faulty. Google recommends the following steps to check whether the hardware on your device is working properly:
- Open the App Store
- In the search bar, type "GPS status"
- Tap the magnifying glass on your phone's keyboard
- Install one of the GPS status apps
- Open the app when you're outdoors
- Under “Accuracy” or “Error”, check the number that appears
- If it’s 0m/0 ft or over 35m/115 ft: Your GPS is not working properly. Please contact your phone's manufacturer to fix the issue.
- If it’s under 35m/115 ft: Your GPS is working
